On Tuesday, Will Smith proved that just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you need to curb your sense of adventure.
A YouTube live-stream captured Smith bungee jumping out of a helicopter near the Grand Canyon. He accepted the challenge from Yes Theory, a channel that raises money for education opportunities for children in underprivileged countries. So not only was the daredevil stunt totally awesome, it was also for charity.
You could tell Smith was nervous about plummeting over the canyon, as was his family and former Fresh Prince of Bel Air co-star Alfonso Ribeiro, who were anxiously observing the stunt from the ground below. But that’s what makes the moment he pushed off and gave himself over to the fall all the more inspiring. And once he was soaring through the air, he looked like he was having the time of his life.
“It goes from pure terror to absolute bliss,” he said, while still swinging over the gorge.
Immediately after the experience ended, he dished out some true words of wisdom about what he learned:
“I am not going to be able to articulate it thoroughly right now but here’s a real relationship between freedom and joy. There’s an idea bubbling in my mind, as fear as a cage, fear actually traps you…My father passed just little over a year ago and there’s something about the confrontation with death that makes you live life more freely. The freedom to just be and do who and what you are, is absolutely exhilarating…Life is hard. You might get hurt. Your heart might get broken. You might lose your job. But you’ve still got to commit.”
