It's been almost two months since Beyoncé graced the world with her 2018 Coachella performance, and we're still feeling the magic. Inspired by HBCUs and using historical excerpts from speeches like "Who Taught You to Hate Yourself" and a rendition of the unofficial black national anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," Queen Bey's performance left many inspired, to say the least. But for Chloe and Maud Arnold, the dynamic sister duo behind tap dancing group Syncopated Ladies, Beyoncé's Coachella appearance was a call to action.
Syncopated Ladies — who are famous for their tap dancing covers of pop hits, including some Beyoncé songs — released a tap dance tribute to OT Genasis's "Everybody Mad," which Beyoncé performed with a marching band at the festival. Directed by Becca Nelson, a tap dancer in the crew, the video shows the Syncopated Ladies tap dancing to the 2017 single that includes Queen Bey's vocals.
Chloe Arnold told POPSUGAR she was overwhelmed with emotion while watching Beyoncé's Coachella performance at home. "Every element of Beychella was so riveting, moving, inspiring, phenomenal, and I knew immediately that I wanted to create something with the Syncopated Ladies that expressed how much Beychella moved us."
The tap dancing crew also took inspiration from Beyoncé's costumes, which paid homage to academic attire and ancient Egypt. Syncopated Lady Anissa Lee designed the team's cropped yellow hoodies, which feature an S and L for Syncopated Ladies in African-inspired font in between the Eye of Horus, the Egyptian symbol for protection, royal power, and good health. But it's the crew's rhythmic dance and empowering moves that really bring this track to life.
"This song says everything about what it means to be a boss and keep doing what you came to do on this planet no matter who or what tries to stop you," Arnold said. "Beyoncé represents that empowered woman, and we feel that deeply!"
