If Elon Musk‘s new goal in life is to convince all of his potential investors that he’s gone completely off-the-rails, he’s doing a fine job.
If you’re not caught up with all of the drama surrounding him right now, you can read about it here. But the basics are that that rapper Azealia Banks accused Musk of tweeting that he was taking Tesla private while high on acid, in spite of the fact that he didn’t really have any funding secured, as a result of which he may or may not have stolen her phone.
Since then, he’s gotten more heat for sending an email to a Buzzfeed reporter in which he called Vernon Unsworth, a British diver who helped rescue the 12 teenagers who were trapped inside a Thai cave, a “child rapist” without any apparent evidence.
In an emotional interview with The New York Times in August, Musk listed Ambien as the only drug that he takes. But the article also noted that “some board members are also aware that Mr. Musk has on occasion used recreational drugs, according to people familiar with the matter.”
When Musk sent out his fateful tweet claiming that he was “considering taking Tesla private at $420” a share, many people mused about whether or not the number had significance given its meaning in marijuana culture. Musk denied that drugs had anything to do with the decision.
“It seemed like better karma at $420 than at $419,” he told The New York Times. “But I was not on weed, to be clear. Weed is not helpful for productivity. There’s a reason for the word ‘stoned.’ You just sit there like a stone on weed.”
So it was perhaps not the very best of ideas to show up on a very popular live podcast with comedian Joe Rogan on Thursday night and proceed to smoke a joint, but that’s exactly what he did.
“I’m not a regular smoker of weed,” Musk said, before taking a puff of a joint that mixed tobacco and marijuana (which, for what it’s worth, is legal in California).
He also drank whiskey, mused about the end of the universe, and played with a flamethrower, all of which is extremely attractive to potential investors. As of this morning, Tesla’s stock has already fallen by 9 percent.
