The "flyover states" — you know, those states in the middle of the country that people, literally, fly over to get to other things? Well, as much as New York City, Las Vegas, California, Florida, and other popular US hot spots sound pretty epic for a vacation locale, skipping the flyover states is a mistake.
I have been lucky enough to travel to some random places in my life, and have visited the states between the famed coasts a lot. By combining business with pleasure (bleasure, anyone?), I've seen the stunning beauty that abounds in states I may not have normally taken the time to visit. It has also helped expand my horizons, and I have a newfound appreciation of the expansiveness and diversity of the US.
So, why visit some of the states that seem almost designed to fly over? We scoped out some reasons you'll be happy you did.

Whether in the badlands of the Dakotas, driving through "big sky" country, or following Route 10 along the southern border, there are some seriously beautiful places to see. Places that are stunning, places that will take your breath away, and places that are so unique in their landscapes, you will never forget them.
Our country has a rich history that is best experienced firsthand. Old forts, battlefields, national monuments like Mount Rushmore — there are so many things in the middle of the country that really showcase what our country has been through and how it shapes culture today. Being able to see these things up close and personally — even if you're not a history buff — is not only cool, but it gives you a leg-up on trivia night, too.
Let's be real — has anyone seen a bison in real life? OK, besides on their burger? I've been a coastal girl all my life and never saw one until I was driving through South Dakota. Not only do you pass ranches and dairy farms, but there are also a wide range of animals roaming wild around the flyover states. Being able to see an animal in its natural habitat is awe-inspiring.
Yellowstone, Glacier, Cuyahoga Valley, White Sands, and Rocks National Lakeshore (pictured) are just a few of the national parks that inhabit the flyover states. Protected land that has not been built on really gives visitors a sense of what the country used to look like without all the hustle and bustle. Each of them is different and stunning in their own ways.
Not only are these places serene and peaceful, but there are also so many cool things to do. From horseback riding to walking on an actual glacier, there are some pretty awesome things to do right in our own backyard. (OK, not literally, but you get it.)
While there are a number of enjoyable activities that are unique to the coasts, there are some seriously interesting places to stop en route through the middle of the country. Want to see the world's biggest beagle? It's in Idaho. How about the world's biggest roll of twine? That's in Kansas.
Checking out some of these places will not only make pretty sweet Instagram opps, but it's also strangely satisfying to have bragging rights about seeing the world's largest catsup bottle.
Hear me out. Yes, you can get pretty much whatever you want on the coasts, I get it. But sometimes a buffalo burger in a small down in South Dakota (Custer, SD, to be exact) tastes better than one in a big city.
The truth is, the food is authentic to the culture in these states. While the big cities have a lot to choose from, these towns stick to their roots when it comes to preparation and flavors. Many of these meals, too, are traditional and harken back to the early days of the country's expansion, the Gold Rush era, and more.
It may not be a trip to Germany to visit castles or drink wine in the South of France, but the memories you will make on a trip like this will be priceless. Trust me, it will give you a new appreciation for the good, ol' US of A.
